A split view at the waterline in the Maldives: a calm sunny horizon above, and a coral reef with tropical fish and a sea turtle below

Indian Ocean

The Maldives, atoll by atoll.

Coral islands strung across the equator, where the lagoon is the main attraction.

Indian Ocean

Twenty-six atolls, one ocean.

The Maldives is a nation of about 1,200 coral islands grouped into 26 atolls in the Indian Ocean, where most resorts occupy an island of their own. December to April brings the driest, calmest weather, and Malé is only about 1 to 1.5 hours from Bengaluru or Kochi. Your resort’s location decides how you reach it: by speedboat, seaplane or a domestic flight.

Choose the atoll before the resort, then compare flights to Malé, which are shortest from southern India. Check entry requirements for your passport, and if you plan to dive, read how travel insurance treats depth limits.

Island transfers

Speedboat, seaplane or one more flight.

Almost every international arrival lands at Velana International Airport, on its own island beside Malé. From there, your resort decides the last leg. Know which one before you book, because it changes your arrival time, baggage and budget.

How the three Maldives transfer types compare
Detail Speedboat Seaplane Domestic flight + boat
Best for Resorts in North and South Malé Atolls, and some in nearby atollsResorts in more distant atolls such as Baa, Lhaviyani and AriSouthern and far-flung atolls, including Addu via Gan
Typical journey About 15–60 minutes for most nearby resortsUsually 25–60 minutes in the air, plus waiting at the seaplane terminalAbout 30–75 minutes by air, then a speedboat to the island
When it runs Day and night, weather permittingDaylight only, on schedules set around international arrivalsScheduled flights, including some after dark
Baggage Generous; luggage travels with youWeight limits apply, often around 20 kg checked plus a small cabin bag; check with your resortAirline allowances apply, sometimes lower than your international ticket
What it feels like Fast and practical, with spray and some bumps in choppy waterA low, panoramic flight over reefs and lagoons; often the most memorable partPractical rather than scenic, but it opens up quieter atolls
Relative cost Usually the lowestUsually the highestUsually between the two

Landing after dark? Seaplane resorts cannot fly you in at night. Plan a night near Malé, or choose a speedboat resort for a late arrival.

Leaving the same day? Seaplane departures are timed to daylight, so very early or late international flights may need a night near the airport.

Transfers are priced separately. Resorts usually charge the transfer per person on top of the room, so compare totals, not nightly rates.

Where to go

Choosing your atoll.

The atoll decides your transfer, your marine life and often your budget, so choose it before the resort.

  1. 01

    North & South Malé Atolls

The closest resorts to Velana International Airport, many reachable by speedboat in under an hour, which makes late arrivals and short stays easier.

    Short breaks, easy transfers
  2. 02

    Baa Atoll

A UNESCO Biosphere Reserve that includes Hanifaru Bay, where manta rays gather during the south-west monsoon, roughly May to November.

  3. 03

    Ari Atoll

West of Malé, with some of the country’s best diving and whale sharks seen year-round in the South Ari Marine Protected Area.

  4. 04

    Local islands such as Maafushi

Inhabited islands with guesthouses, cafés and public ferries. Alcohol is not sold, and modest dress is expected away from designated tourist beaches.

  5. 05

    Addu & the far south

The southernmost atoll, just below the equator, reached by domestic flight to Gan. Quieter reefs and a wartime airfield history.

    Off the beaten track
A candlelit table for two on a private sandbank at dusk, lanterns set in the sand and a violet sky over the lagoon

Island life

The lagoon is the destination.

Most Maldivian resorts occupy an island of their own, so the reef, the lagoon and the sandbanks that appear and vanish with the tide become your whole landscape. Evenings are slow: dinner on the beach, water moving under a deck, stars without city light.

Beyond the resorts, nearly 200 inhabited islands keep their own rhythm of fishing, Friday prayers and island football. A morning on one, or in Malé’s busy fish market, adds a sense of place that a resort alone cannot give.

Experiences

Under the surface and above it.

Most of the magic is underwater, but the evenings on land are just as memorable.

More experiences worldwide
  • Snorkel with whale sharks

The South Ari Marine Protected Area has whale sharks year-round. Licensed guides keep a respectful distance and limit time in the water.

  • Mantas at Hanifaru Bay

In season, plankton draws manta rays into this small bay in Baa Atoll. Access is regulated and snorkel-only, through permitted operators.

  • Dinner on a sandbank

A table set on a strip of sand in the lagoon, lit by lanterns as the tide and the light change around you.

  • A sunset dolphin cruise

Spinner dolphins often ride the bow waves near atoll channels in the late afternoon.

  • A morning in Malé

Coral-stone mosques, the fish market, local short-eats and, with luck, a bodu beru drumming performance in the capital or on an inhabited island.

Sample itinerary

Four days on island time.

Four unhurried days on one island. In the Maldives, the best plan usually involves very little moving.

  1. Day 1

    Land, transfer, exhale

Clear arrivals at Velana, meet your resort’s team and transfer by speedboat or seaplane. Spend the rest of the day on your island: a lagoon swim and sunset from the jetty.

  2. Day 2

    The house reef

Snorkel the house reef in the morning, when the water is usually calmest, with a guided session if you are new to it. Afternoon rest, then an evening on a sandbank.

  3. Day 3

    Out to sea

Join an excursion matched to your atoll and season: whale sharks in South Ari, mantas in Baa, or a sunset dolphin cruise from almost anywhere.

  4. Day 4

    Slow departure

A last swim and a spa morning. Time the transfer back to Malé around your flight, remembering that seaplanes fly only in daylight.

Maldives FAQ

The Maldives, clearly answered.

Which months are best for a Maldives holiday?

December to April is the dry north-east monsoon, with the calmest seas, the most sunshine and the highest rates. May to November is the wetter south-west monsoon: expect some rain and wind, but also long sunny spells, lower prices, better surf and the manta season in Baa Atoll. There is no truly bad month, only different trade-offs.

What happens if my flight lands in Malé after dark?

Speedboat transfers usually run day and night, but seaplanes operate only in daylight. If your resort is a seaplane transfer and you land late, plan a night near Malé or at an airport hotel and transfer the next morning. Your resort will confirm the latest arrival time for a same-day transfer.

Can I visit the Maldives on a budget?

Yes. Guesthouses on inhabited islands such as Maafushi, Thulusdhoo or Dhigurah cost far less than private-island resorts, and public ferries or shared speedboats keep transfers affordable. Local islands follow Maldivian customs: no alcohol, modest dress in the villages and swimwear only on designated tourist beaches.

Is the Maldives suitable for non-swimmers?

Often, yes. Many lagoons are shallow and sheltered, resorts provide life jackets and guided snorkelling, and glass-bottom boat trips show the reef without getting wet. Currents in the channels between islands can be strong, so snorkel only where the resort advises and never alone.

How long is the flight from India to the Maldives?

Malé is about 1 to 1.5 hours from Kochi or Bengaluru, roughly 3 hours from Mumbai and about 4 hours from Delhi on non-stop flights. The Maldives is 30 minutes behind IST, which makes it one of the easiest international breaks from southern India.
